Toyota in Brazil and Antares Recycling are the winners of the 9th edition of FIESP Conservation and Water Reuse Award – an initiative of the Federation of São Paulo State Industries (FIESP). The award ceremony took place on Tuesday (18/03) at the Theatre of Social Service of Industry of São Paulo (SESI-SP) on Avenida Paulista.
Toyota in Brazil got the first place in medium/large category with the “Environmental Management System (EMS)”, which has ISO 14.001 certification.
Applied in everyday life of the manufacturer’s plant operations, in offices and at the organization’s operational centers, Toyota’s System identifies opportunities to increase the efficiency of water use, reducing the waste, its consumption and effluent generation.
By implementing EMS in Brazil, the company managed to reduce its water consumption by 40.9 thousand cubic meters of water, which corresponds to a reduction of 81.7%. R$721,500 were invested in this project and the results show that they now they can save R$411,000 every year.
In Sheila Sakamoto’s opinion, Brazilian Toyota’s representative, the recognition of Fiesp encourages the company’s employees to continue producing less aggressive environmental practices.
“The specific work that we do does not involve high technology. It is a work based on self improvement during our employees’ daily routine. Toyota values trainings a lot. So, this orientation that the employee receives every single day can give them opportunities to show more improvements, “Sheila said.
“This award goes to all employees from Toyota. We are gonna come back home with this trophy and show it at our three units. And it will be another way to motivate them, “she added.
Micro and Small business
Antares Recycling won the Micro and Small Businesses Category for Fiesp Award for Water Reuse.
In micro and small businesses category, Antares Recycling got first place with “Clean Recycling Process (EcoÁcido™) for Electrolyte Solution”, the only component of batteries that was not recovered during the reuse of devices.
Before being treated and transformed into recovered raw material to be used once again, the Used Electrolyte Solution Batteries were neutralized in wastewater treatment plants with strong alkali (caustic soda or lime) and discarded in public sewage systems, rivers and streams.
The Ecoácido ™ program completes the cycle of recycling of batteries and won the Green Seal from the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT).
The process consists in treating the solution without decreasing its concentration, eliminating heavy metals by using chemical procedures and filtration. The treated solution is then sold to other companies as a recycled product at a lower cost than the original raw material.
According to Daniel Trindade, an Antares manager, “Antares has planned a long journey with this project. Everything is doing great and we have received good nominations and awards.”
The EcoÁcido ™ program in Pindorama and Bauru – São Paulo, produces about 390,000 liters of electrolyte solution every month. Customers of Antares Recycling decreased by at least 90% their disposal of industrial effluents.
Antares Recycling has other nine acid recycling facilities in recycling industries of lead-acid battery in Brazil, located in Minas Gerais, Paraná and Santa Catarina. According to the company, the process of recycling is 20% cheaper than its neutralization.
